What Miranda Hobbes Taught Us

My previous post about Carrie Bradshaw was really enjoyed by some readers, one even requested  I do this post! Yay me!
I thought I would create a second episode to what we learn from the Sex and the City Girls, as they are all so different I feel we can learn valuable life lessons from all four of them. Just watch this space...

As I mentioned in the previous Carrie Bradshaw post, I definitely think Miranda is a character with whom  I can relate to more than any of the other Sex and the City girls.
Miranda Hobbes is a very a empowering feminist as well as being sarcastic, honest and a really good friend to Carrie, Samantha and Charlotte. She can pull of a suit and tie better than any man and made more money than her partner and was okay with it!
I wouldn't say I was very empowering and confident like her but I definitely aspire to be.
I would, however. say I am more like her in spirit.
I too am very sarcastic, I'm one of them people who go by the thought "Ask a stupid question get a stupid answer". Yes I am that woman! The one who sarcastically nods when someone states the obvious but I am also very honest like her. Say it as it is. Speak my mind. Yep that's me.

She definitely taught us some life lessons throughout the 6 Seasons and 2 movies, below are a selected few of my favourite.

"I know how to please a man. You just give away most of your power."
What can we take away from this - Here she calls bullshit on patriarchy, she teaches us we shouldn't abandon  our morals and girl power just to make our man happy. Amen.

"He's just not that into you"
What can we take away from this - If anyone remembers this episode, she says this to a complete stranger she overhears on the street complaining about a guy who hasn't called them back. We learn we need to be there for fellow females and don't be afraid to give people the harsh reality when it's much needed.

"Everyone else is glowing about my pregnancy, why can't I?"
What can we take away from this -Everyone reacts to things in their own way,it's okay not to be the one who has everything planned out and floats around on a cloud when they're pregnant, anyone recall her demanding chicken wings for her baby shower?

"Sexy is the thing I try to get them to see me as after I win them over with my personality."
What can we take away from this - Miranda points out this struggle in dating and shows us it is more important for a man to fall in love with your personality and not just your body. A sense of humour and wit goes a long way.

"I have low self-esteem, but I express it the healthy way... by eating a box of Double-Stuff Oreos.”
What can we take away from this -We are not the only ones who indulge on chocolate when we are feeling sh*tty! That certainly makes us feel less guilty!

"I said no white, no ivory, no nothing that says ‘virgin’. I have a child. The jig is up."
What can we take away from this - Miranda gives the middle finger to tradition and teaches us it is okay to abandon social ideologies of how our lives should be lived. We shouldn't be afraid to let our personalities shine!
And last but not least:
"I once was broken up with by a guy's doorman: 'I'm sorry Ms. Hobbes, Jonathan won't be coming down. Ever.'"
What can we take away from this - No  matter how many break ups we ever  experience we will always remember Miranda getting dumped by the doorman and feel a little better. No one can take that humiliation.

Keep and eye out for the Samantha and Charlotte posts that are yet to come!
If you are also a sex and the city fanatic like myself, what are some of your favourite moment of the series?

How To Get Your Beauty Act Together

I always try to follow a beauty and body regime through the week. But knowing which day to exfoliate and which day to fake tan can get a bit muddling and to be honest I always forget!
There is a lot that society tells us we should do to our bodies nowadays such as a coffee grind scrub, homemade banana & avocado face mask and an egg hair mask?!?! It does get too much. As long as we have our weekly beauty regime things shouldn't have to be time or cost effective! Learning what to do and how to do it right, a beauty regime can become part of a person's daily routine without even having to think about it.
That's why I am writing today, to share my advice and hopefully helpful tips to those who do need to get their beauty act together!

Moisturise!
In these cold winter months the most important part of your body to look after is your skin. Your skin is basically the platform to all other beauty aspects.
To start getting your beauty act together, it is important to acquire a good moisturiser. In the winter I find my skin really suffers from the cold and I find E45 cream or some of The Bodyshop Body Butter really nourishing and good to beat the cold winter blues. I recommend the Strawberry, Shea Butter or Argan Oil  butters.
It's important to keep moisturised especially after jumping out of the shower and some shower gels can be quite drying on the skin.

Exfoliate!
Exfoliating is a really important step in one's beauty regime. I didn't start doing this until I was about 17  and I only wish I knew to do it sooner. I had no idea of the benefits a good scrub could do for my skin! Exfoliating helps to get rid of dry skin cells and creates a softer and smoother appearance and feel.
If you  are  one to reach for the bottle of fake tan, I, like a lot of beauty gurus, cannot stress the importance of exfoliating beforehand. It will ensure an even tan without build up around the knees, ankles and  neck.
I have always used the Soap and Glory Flake Away Body Polish which promises to rid us of the scaly legs and reveal body buffed goodness! And the scent is just gorgeous!

Remove that Make Up!
Up until a few months ago I would swear by face wipes to remove the days make up. After watching more than a good few of Tanya Burr's Beauty videos and monthly favourites I discovered she had sworn off using any wipes on her face unless she really had to! When I sat down and thought about, I discovered I agreed with her. I have found after I take my make up off with  wipe and then gone to use a toner I still found myself removing more foundation and mascara that was lurking in my pores and in the corner of my eyes. Wipes are really ineffective, a much better way to remove make up is by using a cleanser.
I am really enjoying Garniers Micellar water and The Body Shops Camomile Cleansing Butter.

Fake it till you make it!
Whilst fake tanning from the bottle is definitely better than going on a sun bed and cheaper than jetting off to Jamaica for a week in the sun, the preparation for your skin is still an important step to ensuring you get the optimum tan, If fake tanning is part of your beauty regime you need to make sure you exfoliate (it is best to exfoliate the day before you tan) and moisturise the key areas that get dry as mentioned before knees, ankles elbows and neck.
Depending which kind of fake tan you use, application is important whether you use a spray or a mitt. always make sure the mitt is cleaned between uses and wipe the nozzle if you use a spray.

Don't forget to cover up!
Although fake tan does wonders to give us that healthy glow it is important to remember that UV rays are still extremely damaging to our delicate skin. It is important to stay protected even if we aren't sunbathing on a beach in paradise.
I'm pretty sure I remember reading in a magazine once that a celebrity used SPF (Sun Protectant Factor) on her hands daily so it would hide any signs of ageing, this does make a little sense as our hands and face are the parts of our body with the most exposure (unless you are Kim Kardashian flashing a lot of cleavage- but that's not a bad thing!) if you have any SPF moisturiser, be sure to cover your mitts and fortunately most Foundations come with a built in SPF! My favourite is the Rimmel Wake Me Up Foundation with a factor of 15.
If not just wear a fabulous hat!

In Good Condition!
Having a good hair routine is also very important. what's the point in having beautifly buffed, golden skin if you don't have the the crowning glory to match?
I cannot stress more about the importance of conditioner. A lot of people complain about greasy hair and moan that their shampoo isn't helping. It is all down to how you use your conditioner. I do use shampoo every time I wash my hair but only use an amount the size of an almond and only use it on my scalp. Shampoo that is used excessively rids the hair follicles of its natural oils and is really damaging to the rest of your hair as a result.
Conditioner should go nowhere near one's roots. This is the key part of this beauty regime.
Keep conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. If you have time try and keep it on as long as possible or invest in a hair mask.  Conditioner doesn't cause greasy hair, unless you haven't washed it out properly. Depending on the length of your hair, the frequency of how many times you need to wash it during the week will be different but  tailor it to whatever suits you but always try to leave at least 2 days between washes as not to cause damage.

Sleep easy!
Do you think they call it beauty sleep for no reason?
We have all had that time when we've stayed out a bit longer for that extra dance or extra drink and some just never made it to bed at all! Been there done that? Then you will probably already have noticed the result on your skin the next day. Bags? Tired eyes? Need of a McDonalds breakfast? Not so attractive.
Sleep is one of the most important aspects of your daily beauty regime as no amount of concealer can cover up tired eyes! Making sure we get an average of 8 hours a night is extremely beneficial and your skin definitely thanks you for it. Sleep gives our body the time it needs to recover and restore from the days antics. Just make sure not to snack to close to bedtime for better quality sleep.

I'm Picking Up Good Hydration!
Water is key to that healthy skin we all desire. We are all so sick of hearing 2 litres a day is what we should be drinking! When I actually look at a 1 litre bottle my mind just boggles. I'm sure I would never be able to get through one bottle let alone 2! But I have found having my own water bottle that I am able to refill during the day is much easier to face then having a great big bottle staring at me from across the table.
I think most of the pressure comes from health professionals saying we SHOULD drink such and such and we SHOULD be doing this amount of exercise. As Carrie would say "Why are we 'should'ing all over ourselves?"
I would be much less reluctant to force myself to drink so much water if people would stop pressuring me. It's definitely not a personal attack but it definitely makes life more scary when people tell us how we should be doing something

Let me know if there are certain things you do to get your beauty act together!

Sparkly Head Bands

I understand I am very late to this party but I have only recently discovered my love for Gossip Girl. Awful, I know. I have literally been in a Netflix coma-like state the past few weeks and have already sped through 4 seasons, 100 cups of tea and 100  slices  of toast and OH MY GOD I am totally obsessed with Blair Waldorf! She is so sassy and head strong, I could only aspire to have her confidence and outlook on life.
That girl has given me some serious headband inspiration so yesterday I decided to pop into Primark and see what they had to satisfy my needs!
I like shopping in Primark as it is really cheap and I don't have the money to splash out on the little accessories here and there as I please and all of these headbands pictured below were only £3 each!
I know there are some people who avoid Primark like the plague but come on, who has the money to spend extortionate amounts on a head piece?!

Look how sparkly and gorgeous they are and just for £3 they're a complete bargain!
My favourite is definitely the gold band, third one down.

Here's some little snippets of me wearing a few!

I can't wait to wear these out, just picture me in a far off dream world with a Martini in one hand and Blair's favourite macaroons in the other!

Scent Paradise

I definitely feel that a spritz of perfume completes an outfit. I never feel fully dressed without one of my favourite scents and going by which mood I am in, I tend to alternate through four different perfumes.
Scientists say smells can unlock forgotten memories and I find this so true. I always flashback to my childhood when I smell Calvin Klein Euphoria which was the perfume that my mum always used to wear.
Now, if I smell Fantasy by Britney Spears it reminds when of when I was 14 at the park with my old school friends.
Pictured below are my 4 favourite scents that I own which all give me flashback or happy memory.

Chanel Chance Eau Tendre is my signature scent at the moment. I bought this for myself back in Summer 2013 at the Airport before jetting off to Turkey with my boyfriend. I love this scent, it is very delicate and fruity-floral with Grapefruit notes with Jasmine. This perfume will always remind me of that holiday and the sparkling wine and 40 degrees temperatures, this will forever stay in my collection, it is scent paradise.

My Chanel Coco Noir parfum was given to me by my neighbours for my 18th birthday. This is really special to  me and I have only used it several times to try and savour it.
The black bottle is so intense much like the fragrance itself. The smell is very deep and rich, people always comment when I am wearing this as the smell is so strong you only need one spray.
I usually save this one for special occasions like Christmas and Birthdays so I'm hoping I'll get many years out of this bottle as I cannot afford to repurchase just yet.

Alien by Theirry Mugler has only recently become a favourite of mine, I got this for Christmas from my mum and have gone through it very quickly! It is such a wintery and comforting scent. The rich floral-woody amber is the perfect note for them long walks through the park with a Praline Cappucino. YUM!
Alien will always remind me of my surprise on Christmas morning because I realised my mum had remembered that I had mentioned this perfume before and really wanted it.

I have been a big fan of Daisy since the Original came out, I remember always stealing my sister's bottle. I guess she finally got annoyed as she surprised me with Daisy Eau so fresh when she came back from one of her holidays last year!
The Eau so fresh version of Daisy is lighter than the original and also sweeter as they wanted to create a Marc Jacobs scent aimed at a  younger audience. It features notes of raspberry, red grapefruit and pear, and does bring to mind a summer breeze through a flowery meadow.
This one is a lot cleaner than the original but not as long lasting unfortunately so re-application is necessary!!

Are there any signature scents that provoke happy memories for you?

Morning Motivation

This is one of my favourite quotes by Mark Twain.
I tend to grovel and be down a lot about the little things in life, then I always try to remember how fortunate I really am and think about all other people on the earth that are happier with less than what I have.

I' don't like to see those around me upset or down and I find happiness in helping others to be happy!
This quote really speaks to me as I find it extremely true and hopefully others do too!

I thought I'd share a bit of motivation for the day, I have planned to dedicate today to writing  and brainstorming some ideas for future blog posts so feel I need the extra encouragement!

Hope everyone has a productive day!

Products I've Nearly Emptied

In January, I usually like to go through my room and chuck out all the stuff I find I no longer need or use which just gets lost at the back of my cupboard and drawers.
I find this really beneficial as it's almost as though my mind is also de-cluttered.
I'd like to add that I'm not the most organised person (Mum would agree) but this takes minimal effort and is so easy to do.

Anyway, whilst de-cluttering my living space I came across all the products that I have almost emptied.
This is definitely a good sign when I have used a lot of or completely finished a product because it means I have absolutely loved it!
I then decided to collectively show you all the products I have loved and the reason as to  why.

(From left to right)

Revlon Photoready Foundation Shade 005 Natural Beige - This product was definitely a favourite of mine during the summer months. It is quite a dark shade and I was only wearing this when I had Fake tanned. I completely emptied this bottle and I have yet to try this foundation in a lighter colour for my pale months in the winter but I can without a doubt say this foundation gives the best coverage EVER!
It has quite a thick and creamy consistency but it blends so easily I find I don't need to use too much and it lasted me a really long time. I could go on and on about this foundation but I don't want to ramble. Moral of the story is, if you are looking for a great coverage foundation THIS ONE WORKS.

Benefit The Porefessional - This primer is widely loved by all beauty enthusiasts for 3 main reasons, it is oil-free,lightweight and leaves your skin like silky silk. Yes.Silky silk. Not only does it soften it REALLY softens resulting in longer lasting make up. Need I say more?

Schwarzkopf got2b Oil-licious Tame & Shine Styling Oil - Bit of a mouthful but explains what it does. Judging by the picture you can see I haven't yet emptied this product but this stuff is so blooming good it has lasted me almost 2 years!
I use this every time I wash my hair either before shampooing for extra-care or pre-styling for more manageability. No it doesn't make my hair greasy, I suffer from extreme frizz and this helps keep that under control, this is especially good for the winter months when my ends are feeling very dry and brittle.
I haven't emptied it as I only need just 1 pump and it will probably last me a  good several more months!

(From left to right)

The Body Shop Wild Argan Oil Bubbling Bath- I got this as part of the Argan Oil body set for Christmas and have already gone through more than half. This bubble bath is so moisturising and smells just like cake! So delicious! I'm a BIG fan of Argan Oil and there are so many uses and benefits for it I cant fault the whole collection!

The Body Shop  Passion Fruit Shower Gel- The smell of this shower gel just takes me to a white sand beach with a Pornstar Martini in hand and sand squishing between my toes! It smells exactly like passion fruit! Which is what I love about it, no false advertising there! Its so refreshing to use in the morning and I see myself going through this very quickly...

L'Occitane Ultra Rich Shower Cream- I got this shower cream in a goodie bag from a special event I went to at one of the L'Occitane shops. It  has a heavy scent of Shea butter so it is really moisturising and hydrating which I don't tend to find as shower gels usually dry my skin out,
I only wish the  full size wasn't so pricey because I would definitely purchase this product in the future!

Zoella Beauty Creamy, Madly Dreamy Body Lotion - Although this is called a body lotion I wouldn't really describe it as one. I usually find body lotions are too runny and greasy but Zoella's is thicker and creamier compared to your average Johnson's lotion.
I definitely love this as the scent is really original and the product itself is extra nourishing on my dry skin throughout the winter, This really is a great product, well done Zoe!

Soap and Glory Butter Yourself- I have almost completely finished this product. I tend to use this product straight after I jump out of the shower just to retain some moisture.  The scent is good and lingers all day and is really cheap! Win win!

St Moriz Instant Self-Tanning Mousse - I have definitely emptied more than a few bottles of this fake tan as it is cheap, fast-drying and not streaky. Is there really anything better? I have tried the Garnier and Superdrug's own alternatives but this has always outshone them! I'd definitely recommend anyone interested in purchasing a new fake tan to try this one.

Last of all is the biggest and brightest.
The Schwarzkopf Blasting Freeze Spray- I bought this the same time as the styling oil as mentioned above and like that product this has lasted me a very long time. I only tend to use hairspray when I have my hair styled up or have curled it, but it definitely helps hair stay in place and it does not budge.
I also love the shape of the dispenser which helps even distribution. (pictured below)

If you can recommend any products that you have nearly emptied like myself please do let me know I'm always looking for more things to try out!

How to Get Clear Skin

January has been full of detoxing for me.
I have embarked on the ambitious (for me) and challenging journey of Dry January which is a what a lot of people do after all the heavy drinking at Christmas and New Years Eve. To be completely honest with you, it's easier said than done.
I had gotten so used to reaching for the bottle of Pinot with my dinner or when I was running one of my Lush baths and it got into a habit that I couldn't imagine breaking.
So after Christmas I decided I had abused myself enough with the Booze, the party food, the goats cheese and Celebration boxes and wanted to try and get my body back to it's normal rhythm.
I cut the drink, I have tried my best to cut bread but have had a few cheeky slices of toast here and there but the biggest effect on my body was my skin!
After all the junk food I just broke out in so many spots and my skin was clearly unhappy!

I know I am not the only one to suffer from this breakout as a result of the festive season but Christmas is over so I vowed this spell of bad skin would be too! Below are some of my tips on how to get clearer skin, they have definitely worked for me the past 3 weeks to clear up the mess made from Christmas!

First, always start by taking your make-up off and cleansing your face. I love using this Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water. It's very similar to the Bioderm Cleansing water is a cheaper alternative. It also lasts ages as you get 400ml!!
It is really gentle and most importantly, it doesn't dry out your skin.
This has no scent which is a bonus because I usually find with other cleansers that they have quite a sweet scent and don't like that on my face.

I then like to go onto washing it with the Body Shop's Tea Tree Skin Clearing Foaming Cleanser. Tea tree, I think, is one of the best things for clearing spots as it contains antibacterial properties which makes it a good alternative to other synthetic chemicals that can be quite harsh on our skin.
Because this is so gentle and soothing you can use it daily, morning or evening whatever suits your skin routine better. It also smells really fresh and great for waking you and your skin up in the morning!

Then I just wash it off with a clean flannel because I hate splashing my face with water and getting my hair, floor and all contents of my bathroom completely wet!!

When I am not in a rush in the morning I like to use the Biore Pore Unclogging Scrub and Blemish Fighting Ice Cleanser. I wouldn't suggest using these every day as they are quite strong.
I'd recommend using the scrub once maybe twice a week just to get rid of dry, dead skin because it is very coarse and gritty and can be too much for our delicate skin every day.

If my skin is particularly bad that day  I will also reach for my Cosmetic Warrior face mask from Lush.
This was recommended to me by one of the lovely ladies who work in my local shop. I told her I have really dry skin but also suffer from a lot of spots and I want a face mask that can tackle both problems. She immediately recommended Cosmetic Warrior and it sounded about right.
My skin tends to suffer from an wearing an excessive amount of make up on a daily basis and this makes really tackles that problem.

It consists of garlic which has antiseptic properties, but don't worry it doesn't stink of garlic! It also has tea trea WOO! and Kaolin which is a type of clay which is supposed to be deep cleansing!
I'm currently sniffing it to be able to describe the smell!
Its definitely got the tea tree scent but is also sweet as there is a bit of honey in it too. but overall not over powering.
I usually reach for this mask on one of my pampering/staying in nights where I'll have a long hot bath, light some candles and read a book, as it is Dry January that is minus the wine!

Here's a picture of me posing with the face mask on :P

This routine really works for me as I have extra dry, sensitive skin. This may work differently for some others but it is what I find gets rid of the spots and keeps them at bay!

Nail Varnish Favourites and Reviews!

I have always believed that nail varnish can finish off an outfit and it is rare that I will be wearing no colour on my nails at all.
Below is some of my favourite (and not so favourite) nail varnishes that I have ever used.

The Last year or so I have become obsessed with the Gelly High Shine Nail Paint by Barry M. The Gelly line has so many bright and beautiful colours to choose from I love them all. However, there is one exception to a particular colour in the line that I will elaborate on further through this post. My top favourites, as pictured above, are Passion fruit, Blueberry, Pomegranate and Grapefruit. All fruity colours, all fruity names, These Nail paints, unlike some gels, do not damage your nails in any way, I find the texture quite thick so it feels like it is protecting my nails and throughout the summer I usually find myself rotating through these 4 colours as they are long lasting and barely chip.

As mentioned earlier, not every colour in a line of  Nail Varnish, Blusher or Lip Gloss can be perfect!
I decided to experiment and purchased another Barry M Gelly in Olive (as pictured above). I wasn't totally impressed with this one.
The colour is very close to the colour of a green olive. I actually LOVE olives but this Nail Paint, not so much. I wore this for about a day then just had to take it off!
I am naturally very pale and when I used this colour it just made my nails look really unhealthy and didn't look right at all on my fair skin.
I thought 'Hmm maybe if I wore it with Fake tan?'
Still, it just didn't look right. I put it down to the colour of the Nail Paint and not my skin because to be honest I can't see this matching any skin colour, light or dark.
This colour is quite similar to Lychee which too I think is very pale and probably wouldn't purchase.

My other favourites are from the line Tanya Burr brought out alongside her lip glosses which I have previously raved about.
I love these nail varnishes especially Penguin Chick, Bright and Early, Little Duck and New York Night (as pictured above)
I wore New York Night a lot throughout the festive season as that is my favourite kind of wintery colour. it is an off black nail varnish with a hint of Purple. It looks more dark purple in the bottle but it comes out very dark. I tend to use between 2-3 coats for an impact colour.
The other 3 colours are perfect for spring and I got a lot of wear out of Little Duck last year and I know I'll definitely be wearing it this coming spring too!
The nail paint is long lasting, dries quickly but as I do type a lot I find the tips do chip after a few days but I always just go over the tips when that happens.

I did also have to mention my favourite colour for the past 5 years.
I really am one to just love black nail varnish and have since I started going to boots and Superdrug with my own pocket money.
You just cannot beat a simple but fierce black nail varnish, I also love painting my toes Black too. Bit much?
I have always used Barry M's Nail Paint in the Colour Black, simple and elegant.
My cat also agrees!

And finally, I have loved the ORLY varnish in the colour' Naughty'. This is quite similar to Tanya Burr's New York Night' but instead has a reddish tint to the off-black colour.
This nail varnish is quite a thin, translucent consistency so needs more than 1 coat and chips easily, but because I love the colour so much I just put an extra top coat over it to seal the colour and get a few more days wear out of it.
This is quite a christmassy colour so wouldn't really wear it any other time of the year but I had to mention it as I haven't spotted any colour quite like it in the shops!

What colours have you been loving?
Let me know!

What Carrie Bradshaw Taught Us

I am such a HUGE fan of Sex and the City I could pretty much recite all 6 seasons!
Although I tend to think of myself more of a Miranda Character (the sarcastic one) I still always aspire to be more Carrie Bradshaw-esque.
Women across the globe envy her wardrobe and shoe collection but what I find is my favourite aspect of her life running around Manhattan is the lessons we are able to take away from her.
Below are some of the moments that I have truly taken away from the SATC Series.

"Maybe some women aren't meant to be tamed. Maybe they just need to run free until they find someone just as wild to run with them."
What to take away from this- Do not change for anyone

"The most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself."
What to take away from this- Your own personal relationship with yourself is the most important one

"When I first moved to New York I Bought VOGUE instead of dinner I just felt it fed me more."
What to take away from this- We do not have to feel guilty if we do this also, with a glass of Merlot on the side of course!

"I've spent $40,000 on shoes and i have no place to live? I will literally be the old woman who lived in her shoes!"
What to take away from this- It is okay to splash out on a pair of shoes but make sure you can afford your rent! Prioritise people!!

"My mind was yelling how angry I was, but my heart,,, my heart."
What to take away from this- Sometimes in life we need to listen to our heart over our heads, the heart knows what it wants

"I like my money where I can see it- hanging in my closet"
What to take away from this- Investing in a Gucci suit or a pair of extra special Manolos IS  a good idea, PRAISE THE LORD!

"Shopping is my Cardio"
What to take away from this- If you have walked laps of your local shopping mall multiple times you will know the exhaustion that comes with browsing every shop and having to carry all those shopping bags on the way 'boohoo!'

And most importantly, your girlfriends are your soul sisters and no man can come between!
